Burning Oil

    I have a 20hp Kohler vertical overhead valve engine that I just replaced the right hand side head gasket, intake gasket, and exhaust gasket. It seems to be running fine and not leaking oil, but now it smokes and burns 1/2 quart of oil every 2 hours of mowing. I figure it must be the valves but am not certain. Anybody info would be greatly appreciated.

    Wow, 1/2 quart is alot of oil to be burning...you are probably right on when it comes to the valves, a leakdown test is needed to be certain.

    As lawnmaniac said a leak-down test would tell all, But I have never seen valves cause that much oil consumption alone.
    Do you have two single mufflers to know for sure it's the same side you just replaced ?
    Did you buy the gaskets separately or did you buy the head gasket kit with new head bolts ?
    Did you put a stright edge on the head and block to check for flatness ?
    Did you torque the head to the proper spec. and pattern ?
    Sorry for all the questions just trying to gather facts to help solve your problem.

    sounds more like rings. did it do this at all before, or why did you pull the head?

    How many hours on the engine?

    The reason I changed the head gasket is because oil was pouring out of that area. I bought the kit with the replacement bolts as well. I put the gasket on and used guesstimate torque(tight and then some) since I could not find the specs. The engine no longer leaks oil it burns it. It runs fine, but turning on the PTO for blade engagement or idling down it puffs smoke. The tractor was made in 2000, I bought it this past Spring with supposedly 147 hrs. I would guess the hour meter was unplugged or turned back since the front tires were worn almost bald. How do I perform a leakdown test? Thanks again for all the help.

    Well you need a leakdown tester and a air compressor, If you have the compressor the one below is the cheapest one I've found so far and is just fine for average use. It should come with detailed instructions on how to perform the test.
