I am in the process of starting my business in Richmond, VA. Anyone from that area who can tell me the business license fees and process. I looked it up on the Henriceo County website, seems vague. Any other area information would be helpful as well. Thanks.

You have to go to the Courthouse in the locality yourbusiness is based in and apply. If you have a Richmond mailing address, make sure you live in Richmond, Henrico, or Chesterfield. All three of these have Richmond mailing addresses but are actually 3 different jusrisdictions.

Thanks Wingnut, how about the fees, it sounds very steep to me (Henrico web site), something about 20 cents for every dollar of income ... that would be nuts. Would I need a license in each county that I did work in?

Thanks for your help, lawnsite.com is a wonderful place, I haven't even got started back in business and I have learned so many new things here. Should be able to hit the grass running and not learn by the old "trial & error" method, been there, did that, didn't like it, gave the T-Shirt away.

Chesterfield is free if gross is less than 10k, then they charge a fee after that, also they want to know how much you make outside of Chesterfield so they can tax it. I can work anywhere, I just have to report to them if I work outside of the county.

Let them come to you. Don't apply for all that county crap/ etc it can only lead to more problems with zoning, etc.

If/when they do find you, just stare at them stupid and say "I never heard of that." There are so many scofflaw outfits that if you are nice to them they will tell you the least burdensome way to be compliant.
