If you've come up with a name that you want to register as a "DBA" and you find out that someone uses that name on the other side of the country can you use that name too? I'm trying to come up with a name that doesn't involve my last name but everything I've thought of I've found doing a search on the internet.

As long as it's not in your state.

If you'll want a web site in the future better check that the domain is available.

You can use most any name that's not registered in your state. However you can't use major well known names such as Sears Lawn Service. But for the most part, if it's not registered in your state, and if it's not protected under the federal trademark, patent, or copyright lawn.

I had a really cool name a few years ago that I was going to use. "The UnderCutter" haha
