A fellow landscaper that I know, and sometimes use as a mentor is thinking about retiremnt. He owns 2.0 acres, 2 trucks, a bobcat, and the nursery buildings. I am willing to make him an offer, but am not sure of the value of the company. Any suggestions?

Have a qualified appraiser or real estate person (whom YOU hire) do an appraisal.

Pretty complex question really. Is it really a profitable business or are you just buying the real estate ? If it's just real estate you should be able to get an appraisl for $200-300. The biz end is a different story. Ask about a lease with a buyout option after a set priod of time. Good Luck.

Make sure you go to the county court house and check the property taxes. Also check for any liens against the property.

Also talk to his vendors and suppliers. Find out the cost of materials.

Do a business plan and project your sales revenue. Do your homework.
