when you dont do deep tillage regularly and are going through with a disk or field cultivator year after year a layer of compaction develops just below where the disk, field cultivator runs.
Edit: it affects water and root infiltration
They also had hard pan below where they had plowed.

Why a New Holland over a Hagie?
Now that's a sprayer.
Sprayed 180ac of headline on corn with a 2 year old Hagie this past summer. Ten minutes in I was certain I'd never own one. Hagie is half the machine the Miller Nitro is!!!
