I keep seeing people say they charge by the hour. we have never done this because we usually run through yards pretty quick. we run through most yards in 30-40 min, mostly .5 acre and up yards. can someone enlighten me. thanks.

It all depends on the job you've got to do.
Most of my jobs are per hour but if it just mowing I charge per job/yard.

Most people charge by the job - but you need a per hour amount based on your business in order to estimate and you can determine how much revenue you generated on a job per hour. The times I see guys using an hourly rate is on jobs they don't feel comfortable with , for whatever reason. I just won't charge by the hour - to many downsides.

If I can provide a strong estimate based upon past experiences then I charge by the job. If its trimmimg a property and I'm unsure about the time it will take me then i charge by the hour. Mowing is usually by the job, landscaping and debris clean up is usually by the job. Trimming is usually by the hour.
