Charging For Designs

    Ok, so this year making the change to charging for all landscape designs. Curious how you guys have been charging?

    I never wanted to charge since many lco's aren't charging for a design around here. But after last year with customers getting my designs and then having a company that was less expensive install it, charging is a must.

    I was thinking $150-200 if customer wants designs, then if they contract us for the work the design charge is reimbursed. If they don't contract us atleast I was paid for the time doing the design.

    Thoughts?

    Depends on your market. Too high and you weed out a lot of leads. Too low and you look like you're just trying to nickel and dime them and they assume the fee isn't necessarily for something of value.

    One of the designers I know who also does install shoots for 5% of what they think the project total will be, so if it sounds like it'll be roughly a $15k job he tells them $750 in design fees.

    If you're going to charge for designs you have to be producing good concepts that are presented professionally. If you're going to do the old BS of "we'll rebate the design fees" you need to already have the customer convinced that you're who they want anyhow. Where do you stand on those points?

    I know of another company around $200 for designs. I couldn't see charging 5% of the cost of job for a design. Did a design last week for a 35k job and took me 3 hours for the design part. No way could I charge $1750 for that design. But like you said just depends on your area. With all the lco's that don't charge for designs, my charges have to be low and designs have to be better than the other companys..imo

    And yes, designs and presentation are fine. bid and designs and introduction letters, pictures are all in a folder and go to customer. Below is one design we just did

    Right now I charge $125 for a design. If they use me for installation then I waive the fee.

    Sounds fair to me for a basic design. Bigger the design is slight increase in price I think. Should keep them from getting a lot of bids as well.

    One thing that works against you with computer imaging for small landscape projects, in my opinion, is that people think the computer did it rather than you. You have to remember that you can sell a landscape or you can sell yourself. The difference is that if you sell the landscape, anyone can build it. If you sell yourself, .... there is only one you.

    You can do one design for free. For the full package it's $500/year.
