    I was turning left but the truck fought back. if you look at "truck4.jpg" you can see the ball joint.

    yup, does it have zerks or is it a permanent lubed, if its permanent it was missed during assembly, if it has zerks it was missed after installation and at oil changes.
    I've replaced a bunches of them in my life as a mechanic, only times i saw failures was due to lack of lube, useful life used up or accident related.
