I'm going to have a logo designed by a proffesional company and before I do I have to decide on how to name my business. Right now I mainly do mowing, trimming, and edging. I have done some planting and hedge trimming and I would like to expand into some landscaping. Should it be?

    Crawford lawn Care

    Crawford lawnscapes

    Crawford Lawn Maintenance

    Crawford landscaping

Any other suggestions? I don't want people to get the idea I'm a full landscaping company right off the bat as I don't want to disappoint. But I want to leave room for improvement without changing the name later.

When trying to come up with a good business name you need to understand that it has two parts. Part one tells people what you do, example: Lawn Maintenance, Landscaping, Tree Service. Part two tells people either who you are. Here you can insert your name OR geographical location, example: Crawford (your name), Davenport, Rock Island (location).

The name needs a professional ring to it that separates you from the competition. Jo's Lawn Care is the oldest business name on the books and, in your case, Crawford Lawn Care doesn't sound much better. I changed my business name to Appomattox River Landscapes exactly one year ago to separate myself from the competition and it has worked (my business name is still Daniel's Lawn Care here on lawnsite because I have not figured out how to change it).

Below are some options for you that I came up with. Try to be unique and Good Luck!

    Crawford Lawn & Landscapes
    Landscapes of Davenport
    Rock Island Grounds Maintenance

Send Michael J. Donovan a PM asking him to change it for you. He will.

Along with what Daniel said, you can also use something that's unique about yourself in your business name. Mine is Hickory Leaf Landscape because I love squirrel hunting and squirrels love hickory nuts.

I really dislike the "last name landscape" companies....where's the distinction...

Some unique names around here are Blue Fox, Plantscape, Turf Master, Bird's Eye View, Artistic Creations, and Steel City.

However...out of the 6 biggest maintenance companies north of Pittsburgh where I am...4 are the "last name landscape"...JML Landscape Management, Sarver Landscape Maintenance Company, Eichenlaub Landscape Contractor, and MMC Land Management.

And with the Big 4, as I call them...it doesn't even matter that their name isn't "unique"....they have an image associated with their name and the commercial accounts know the image more than the name.

I don't like the sound of Crawford Lawn and Landscape...everybody has a name like that. If you like, then roll with it...my opinion shouldn't matter, but just take into account that until you create a specific image for yourself then your name's not going to sound any different than anybody else's.

I like Luscious Louie's Lawn care, so long as your name is Louie.

If you happen to be Hispanic, you could use Muchas Grasses Lawn care

Is your emphasis more on lawn care, or on landscaping? If you JUST want to be a lawn care company, then what about a simple name like The Lawn Specialists, you could even add the name of your area- Like Crawfordville Lawn Specialists, it makes you sound pro.

Sorry, no time to sit and read all the post on here, may have been said already, but before you spend any money on printing, FIRST check to see if that name has all ready been taken and registered with the city.

By making your name "Smith Lawn Care" or "Johnson's Lawn Service", for example, your putting your reputation on the line. People know who you are and that your honest because your willing to put your families name on it. I'd go with that. Also, in Iowa you don't need a DBA if your last name is in it.
