Usually I show a copy of my insurance when asked but a builder/contractor has asked for a copy to keep. Is this standard/common?

Not uncommon at all. All of my commercial accounts require a Certificate of Insurance.

All ours do as well, & I tell residential clientele if they need one, my insurance will send them one.

It is a thing they do, because any Joe Blow can run off a legitimate looking form on their laser jet printer, the customers who know this feel better if they get a fax or a copy mailed direct from the InsCo, is all it probably is.
