I spotted some early crabgrass--about 1/8 inch tall. May 6th. However-- this crabgrass was in a highly crabgrass prone area. Sunny, sandy soil, thin grass, between road and sidewalk, heavy crabgrass last year, no pre-emergent. Soil temp in the affected area was 60, and air temp was 65. It coincides with crabapple bloom, and early lilac bloom. Maple trees leafed out. And about two weeks after dandelion bloom. Growing degree days about 316. No frost for two weeks. Rain about 4 days ago.
I would expect that in thicker lawns the emergence would be delayed. And frost is still not unusual.
