Lets start by saying I have no idea about engines. I picked up a craftsman 5.5 for free, changed the gas, cleaned sparkplug, blew air filter, checked oil. With all that being said, I shot starter fluid in the carb and it will burn that up then quite. Any general suggestions?

Sounds like the carb. needs a complete tear-down and cleaning paying attention to the fuel inlet needle valve and the main jet which is a small hole in the bowl nut, Also a small hole just above the threads on the side of the bowl nut.

What is the jist of a carb job. Take everything apart, clean, and reassemble?

As long as it's not flooding fuel all over just take it apart and do as I said above and clean it with a spray can of carb. & choke cleaner spraying in all passages and jets and re-assemble.
