craftsman snowblower

    yes i have a 5 horse power briggs motor on a craftsman snowblower i went to go start it this year to get it ready it started fora few mins then just locked right up cant pull it over by hand or electric start and when it was running for a few mins it smoked some and some smoke was coming out of the oil fill tube is there valves that have to be adjusted on these or something

    Did it have oil in it?

    Without engine model/type numbers all I can do is guess you have fuel in the crankcase (carb flooded) and is now liquid locked (fuel in cylinder on top of piston).

    Some of these Briggs carbs are cheaper to replace than try to repair, (Again no numbers).

    Since it did run for a couple minutes, I don't think it's hydro locked, but-
    Check the oil level
    Pull the spark plug and see if the engine will rotate
    IF it's an OHV engine, remove the valve cover and look for a valve that may be stuck open/bent
    As Rob mentioned, engine numbers are useful.

    ok engine number is 143.955001 the dom number is 4/23/00 and i tore it down adn found these problems wit hth e rod and i think the govonor gear assembiley dont mind the pictures where taken on a camera phone

    Looks like your in need of a new engine, And just for the record...That's a Tecumseh.
