I have done a lot of garden bed maintenance (edging, mulching, weeding & plantings). I have never created a garden bed. I have a job next week were i need to create a garden bed around a house. I was wondering if you guys use a garden hose to define the layout of the bed? what is the best way to define the shape of the garden bed? Let me know how you guys do it!

Sometimes I can outline it with a mantis... or just spade through the sod... Paint cans are handy if you got it, but like you've already experienced,,, how often do you really need it???

Are you going into sod??? if so you might use a pitchfork to lift it up with as opposed to shovel... have fun... :)

Yes i do use a garden hose to get a initial shape, that's a good idea because you can change it so easy.

I would use the garden hose if i were working with the client so she could get a visual of what it would look like. But 90% of the time I take a spade and just design it.:)
