Customer accusation of property damage

    I've got a big time P.I.T.A. customer who is a habitual late payer. Anyhow, as the season wraps up here, she emails me today saying that she noticed two days ago her hose had been left on the slightest bit and now her basement has taken on water. She sent pictures backing up her claim.

    She didn't implicitly request any form of restitution, but I think that is the direction it's headed. Anyhow, I have no way to prove whether it was or wasn't my business who is to blame.

    How would you handle this?

    Doesn't seem like the water should have made it into the basement. What happens when it rains? I'd probably report it to my insurance company and just wait to see if she files a claim.

    Why would your guys use the hose?

    I'd go by and take photos kf everything and investigate whether or not the fawcett turns off easily. Also make sure after you turn the hose off to check the meter to see if the leak detector is not running...if it is... indicating a problem elsewhere, not your problem

    Did you turn on her hose when you were last at her property for work?. If yes and your not sure if you turned the hose off after use you may have a problem to resolve with your customer. If no than you have no problem
    and pictures of a flooded basement sent by email to you can hardly hold you responsible. Which one is it?

    We had no need to use the faucet. She alleges that one of our blowers hit it when we allegedly moved her hose caddy. Probably gonna call insurance company.

    Plus water leads to mold which leads to major claims. Nip it quick.

    Document what activities you are certain that occurred on your end, in terms of being on the clients property, (when & what you did). A paper trail is your best friend in these situations, in case you get pulled into small-claims court.

    Meanwhile she needs to file a damage claim w/ her insurance company.

    Unless she actually witnessed what she is alleging against you or your employees it is just her opinion. If your insurance agent is working in your best interest he or she should be able to resolve the matter in your favor. I do not believe she has a claim against you or your company.
