I was at Deere dealer today and the employee working their said it was a good day. They sold 6 new diesel 997's today to one customer. He says that same customer buys 3 every year also in December for a tax purpose. Must be a good size operation.

Holy Cow! I don't think I can even dream of needing that many mowers, especially in one year. I'd probably need to be mowing all over this and my surrounding counties!

Wow, thats an operation there. I was stoked once when I worked for a company and they sent me at the end of the day to take my rig to the mower store to pick some "some stuff" up , Two new EFI toros with baggers were loaded into the trailer and they were for my route.

Have yet to obtain that baller kinda purchase on my own ...haha

I bought 10 Scag Cheetahs just last week. I got 5 crews taking over a large company for me while I sit back and watch. :)

Seriously, it's not that big of a deal that a thread had to be started. I was at my Scag dealer (for real) and saw a guy buy 4 TT's. He didn't pick them up, he was making the purchase. He also trades in most mowers every two years.

With the section 179 accelerated depreciation tax rule, does it make sense to buy a $10K mower every year? Or several mowers if you are a big operator?

Say you buy a mower for $10K, reducing your taxable income by the full $10K by taking the full depreciation the first year, then theoretically sell it for $8K the next year. Do you pay capital gains on the $8K? Even so, would it be better to pay only 20% capital gains on $8K ($1600) instead of 30% income tax/soc security/medicare taxes on $10K ($3000)? Is that how it works? Do guys cheat and not report the $8K sale of the asset (mower)?

Or maybe you buy a truck every year for $35K, and sell the old one.

Is anyone doing this section 179 stuff?

I know a guy who has 7 crews, res/and commercial. His labor average is 30g/weekly. Careful what you wish for.
