    Hey,

When towing, what is the proper gear to use? What circumstance would you want to use while towing and under what circumstance would you shut over drive off? Always wondered if I should actually be towing in D.

    Cheers

Most people say to switch out of overdrive when the tranny is shifting too often. I usually switch out of overdrive for any load more than 3500 lbs. I would not tow for any long perioid of time in drive 1 or 2. I would only use those if I was in 4wd and still slipping while pulling a trailer, like on a boat ramp. Never had to switch into drive 1 or 2 while towing.

I use 1 and 2 when going down steep grades with a heavy load. Otherwise I keep it in D.

However, this is in my old Chevy with a hopped up Turbo 400 transmission.

Ok Thanks. Can you shift from D to D1 or 2 on the fly while moving or only from stop? Im using a 98 Dodge ram with the 360 5.9L

    Cheers

i always tow in D, and in tow/haul mode. if i am in tow/haul mode and in (3) then i get harsh shifts. and yes you can change from (1) to (2) to (3) to (D) without stopping.

Yes you can shift 1 to 2 to 3 without stopping, but just be sure that you are off the gas.

Dont be shifting on the fly if you are going to fast for the gear you are selecting. For example if you are moving 45 mph down a hill in 3rd, dont manually put it in 1st
