Had a guy show me a Davey tree estimate the other day ........15000 sq ft lawn, $40 per app. Bit hard to compete with that on a regular basis. I did sell it for $48 though.

Man, that is not what I like to hear! I, personally, tell people to take that estimate and sign up as quickly as they can. Take it! the price is unbeatable, for sure! Don't give them an estimate unless they still ask for one. ( I would get closer to $65 for that lawn). Explain to them briefly that the large companies will:
    A. treat your lawn as one of 40 in a day and 800+ for a month (per applicator).
    B. telemarket you for upsales relentlessly.
    C. Sell you products and services you don't need.
    D. Make you call me next year to do it right at a fair value.

Don't forget to call me again. It has been a pleasure meeting you. :)

Make it short and genuine, otherwise it is a waste of time. But then the whole call was probably a waste of time anyway. But to get hammered on profit margin by engaging in price wars with the big guys is like throwing a tennis ball at a tank, and brother you ain't gonna win that one.

I picked up a 5000sq.ft lawn the other day. ChemLawn was
doing it for 61.50. The owner didn't have a problem with
the price just the service. Now i'm doing it for 60.00.

Man, how much are you guys charging per 1000? The going rate in my area is about $2.25 per 1000.

Back when i worked for tru green/ chem lawn
they had accounts that where 30,000 sq ft. and doing it for $29
and some were 10,000 sq. ft. and getting $18
but they some that were 2,000sq. and getting $50

they do get tons of cancels do to poor results
which is good for me i will pick them up at a higher price and give them much better results.

gt-racer50, $2.25 per 1000 sq ft!!!! We try to get $4.50-5.00 but will go as low a $4.00 but only rarely. One bag usually covers around 12,500 sq ft. and cost around $23.00 (lesco momentum, we use it on two rounds). On an average 10,000 sq ft lawn at $2.25 thats $22.50 per app. Your only making about a $1 to $3 dollars. My gosh, how would your even cover your insurance.

When they show you an esimate that cheap, tell the customer to ask them for a program. Chances are, yours will be more comprehensive.

I just gave a quote today, fert with pre-emergent...32,000 sqft Total Treatable Area...I quoted $4 per 1000 for $128. I got up to the door and there was a quote from another LCO there... he was going to do it for $40!!!
That is FORTY DOLLARS! His cost of chemicals has to be at least $30. I ran his name through the license data base for Indiana and HE IS LICENSED. But what is he thinking, that is $1.25 per 1000. Guess he is buying the business this year with hopes of raising rates next year????

Can you make it at $1.25/1000? I thought I was cheap at $4/1000?

    COMMENTS?

That is like TruGreen broad app rate, or even lower at $1.25. See my previous post for how to treat that situation.
