I have a JD 797 that has 350 hrs on it and still has the original desk belt on it. I have been through two "mule" belts (one broke with 10 hrs on it, but JD warrantied it) but still on the original deck belt. The belt is pretty warn and it came off one time this weekend and it got me to wondering if I should go ahead and get a spare because i mainly cut on the weekends and if it were to break after 12 I would not be able to get one that day.

I keep spare belts for almost every belt on every machine in a tool box on the trailer. Unless you have a ton of free time to go chasing down a belt when you are in the middle of working I'd suggest you get spares. Yes, the deck belts can get pricey (+$50) But think of it as insurance. Plus, instaed of replacing the belt you have, just carry the new one with you, get every hour out of it you can, it may suprise you sometimes just how long a belt that looks worn out will run.
