Have a Deere garden tractor with a 17 horse Kawasaki under the hood. The engine is not charging the battery. Where do you think I should look first? I figure it's the stator, but I'm really clueless about charging systems that don't involve an alternator.

Do you guys have any ideas? I'm only getting 12.8V at the battery, and voltage ain't going up when the engine running. I'd really rather not tear this thing apart no more than necessary.

You need 28-40 VAC from the stator at WOT and 13-14.5 VDC at the regulator at WOT. Test with a VOM meter. The two wires coming from under the flywheel are from the stator.

My LX 172 had this problem and it was the rectifier. The yellow battery indicator would flicker on and off intermittently.
