at the end of august or beginning of september I plan on having someone come do a dethatching to my lawn at the house I just bought and would overseed at the same time frame. Do I need to aerate after the dethatching before I seed and fertilize the lawn? The lawn is in bad shape as a old lady lived there before and didnt seem to have anyone taking care of it besides mowing.

Yes I would definitly aerate before putting down seed and fertilizer.

If all she did was mow, there isn't a likely reason for Aeration... Aeration is not for seedbed prep...

There are 3 reasons for Aeration and seedbed preparation is not one of them...

    1) to get a lot of seed into 2" - 3" deep holes. The 1/4" depth rule ifor suckers...

    2) so there are roots exposed to the hot summer sun if they haven't closed up yet.

    3) because those gooseturd looking plugs,,, means money... :)

I am sure the manufacturers of slit seeders would disagree with #1.
