is it necessary to mark sprinkler heads when dethatching with flail blades or will they be unharmed if i rake over top of them?

Depends on you want to replace the heads or not. It's never required, only recommended.

I never mark heads when power-raking. Never had a problem either.

If you are using spring tines then I wouldn't really care but flail blades will trash sprinkler heads.

I know the solid blades will, but I have never had a prob with the flail (swinging) type like on the Bluebird.
