Dfi Explanation From Kohler

    I question my friend with Kohler about the differences in the Kohler EFI and the Kawasaki DFI system, here is his response.

    Hi Reid,
    The Kawasaki system is an "OPEN LOOP" , non-feedback
    system. This means that it follows a predetermined fuel map with no
    feedback or ability to adapt to changing conditions or altitude. The
    Kohler EFI is a Bosch designed "CLOSED LOOP " feedback fuel injection
    system. This system uses an oxygen sensor and various inputs (from the
    speed sensor, oil temp. sensor and throttle position sensor) to
    determine what fuel and ignition requirements needed to constantly adapt
    and deliver maximum efficiency. While actual testing in the Lab has
    shown a fuel efficiency gain of only about 10 to 12 percent at WOT and
    full load, field testing has shown gains in the neighborhood of 30
    percent due to the various speed and load requirements. Hope this helps.

    I wonder if the Kawi system is an adaptation from one of their motorcycles?

    I thought that DFI was Direct Fuel Injection. The fuel is directly injected into the cylinder. Much more efficient than the older EFI that injects in to the plenum somewhere usually right before the valve.

    D.I. = Direct Injection

    DFI = Digital Fuel Injection

    TBI = Throttle Body Injected

    TPI = Tuned Port Injected

    SFI = Sequential Fuel Injection

    B-T-W = Balls-To-the-Wall :clapping:

    of course i dont know what any of those mean besides efi.

    I don't have a clue other than to know their motorcycles will fly.

    You here different opinions from different manufactures, I wish someone would come on this site that is bias; really knows both of these systems, tell us the pro's and con's of each and which one should be the best.

    Did you install your Filter Minder yet, sometime when you get a chance put something (maybe a piece of plastic) covering a big portion of the filter, see how it reacts and come back with the test results.

    I have read a large post by a guy (can't remember who) on the differences and advantages of one over the other but I just can't remember the details. Just two different approaches to fuel injection. One thing I'm fairly certain about is that Kawasaki knows what they are doing so I wouldn't hesitate buying the 29dfi. I have also heard enough good about the 28 Kohler to know the Bosh system works excellent.

    But it would be nice to get some expert input. Although experts are often as biased as anyone.

    Motorcycles use closed loop systems.
