Just wondering if anyone has ever seen old elec cables serving as ground markers for the new ones farther down. Also can this throw off the scanning locating equipment?

I deal with utilities all the time in my line of work, most are gas, hydro, cable, phone, mains etc. usually if new lines are installed the old ones are removed. Doesn't make sense to dig around and under the old lines and not remove them for a new install. But with utilities you never know. I could write a book on the amount of times utilities weren't were they we're supposed to be or never showed up on a locate. I make custom cutting edges/ round end blades for all of my tooth buckets and never take them off. More so this helps eliminate damage to utilities if you do come across them where they shouldn't be.

    Sean,

Would you be willing to share some pictures of the cutting edges? Sounds like an interesting idea.

well it would have came from overhead lines. I was thinking this line i dug up was an overhead line that was dropped in the top 8 inches of backfill to mark where the new underground had gone. power is still working anyway so it cant be a good line. Dig safe came back as all lines overhead which I obviously knew was wrong as there are no lines overhead. So I guess I'll have to call for private utility scan. PITA but Im not looking to see another 3" cable come outa the ground for a while

Sure can let me see if I can dig some up if not I will grab some tomorow. I got them on all the machines from the u-17 kubota all the way to the 310 backhoe , 200 hitachi and everything in between . Saved our bacon a few times on utilities that didn't show up on locates
