First I'd like to say that I am in NY and am having some problems getting the info I need. I have a Ford F550 dump and would like to know if I need a DOT number?? I've gotten mixed answers from people... and the DOT has been hard to get on the phone. If anyone has some info I would appreciate it.

I am not an authority, but this is how I read it...

If you are intrastate (staying in NY), you do not need a USDOT number.

If you are interstate, you do.

This is for a vehicle registered at over 10,001 pounds.

    Here's the website:

I used to drive a tractor-trailer up into western NY everyday, and let me tell you, the NY DOT is everywhere, and very strict. You are doing the right thing in finding out if you need the number or not.

Another thing you can do, is if you see the DOT guys somewhere, just stop and ask - they are very knowledgable in this of course. But, if you ask while you are driving you F550, and find that you are supposed to have the number, you are taking the chance of getting nailed just for asking.....

Thanks alot. I dont leave NY. All of my work is in Staten Island. You've been really helpful. I will try to get in touch with the DOT just to make sure.
