Just like McDonald's - always get their money, downpayment amount is up to you.

You'll eventually do well meeting suppliers that can give you a 50% due in 30 days and balance due in 60 days.

I require 50% for landscaping jobs up front......no deposits for weekly service.

Is the customer giving you down payment when he signs the contract?
Or are you trying to demand a down payment when he signs the contract.
    Explain more.
For maintenance do not demand a down payment unless the customer looks like someone who cannot pay.
For installation demand 50% before you start for people are not Jesus.
If the customers hands you a check with the contract take it, this will help your cash flow but make sure you go out and mow the lawn.
    That is my advise.
