Have you found the rod size to affect accuracy or ability to read at depth?

Size does matter somewhat but i tell by feel.

Since i don't have anyone to learn from or compete with or against, i can only judge my abilities from my failures.

One could look at it several ways. Smaller (diameter) rod might be more sensitive to field strength therefore allow better detection at depth ...... or larger rod might be more sensitive given there is more metal to be impacted by the fields. Any insight?

You have 2 good points brother, at this point i have no data to support or dismiss either.

Give me time and i may have something more than speculation to post.

I would like to add a comment to Grassman.

Very few if any know exactly what and where all conductors are buried on their property. Even in the 40 acre pasture i swept the site before i placed the target field up. The idea behind a visual target is that one can focus on the stick response in relation to the target. If the target is not visual then too much is left to assumption and the stick response may be misleading.

i hear ya, but i do actually know. there is no underground utilties other than gas and water here. plus, i can follow my path of wires and valves right along with ease. i have a small area really to mess with, but i totally understand what you mean.

Jim that was a really awesome video and very impressive what rod's can do. I remember as a kid my dad used them to locate our drain field

I think some experimenting is in order !
