I have a grasshopper with a bad eaton hydro. Are they easy to locate to replace? And can a different brand hydro work with this grass hopper(model1620 with B&S motor)?

You will have to get that from Grasshopper. That hydro unit is not rebuildable from an economic standpoint. I would guess that you are looking at between $750 and $1000.00 to replace it. I have not priced one lately.
How do you know it is bad? Any chance an oil change and new oil filter will give it new life?

have you checked to see if the hydro lock out is engaged. this let's the machine roll when not running. do a search for eaton because thier tech guy will help you diagnose the problem free. then he can get you the parts.
