Is it worth paying the extra for the steel shaft?

I wouldn't pay extra for the better shaft. I've never had any problems in 5 years with 3 Echo shafts. Also the 260's have problems because they don't have an adjustable carb. If you can find a 2601 buy it. Best darn trimmer out there.

260s no doubt about it, the head speed is faster, and its quite a bit smoother, and last longer too..

Does the 260s have an adjustable carb? Or is it like the 260?

As a lot, the Echo product have gone down hill alot in the past 6-7 years. We've given up on them and have been in the testing mode with other brands this year. With regards... devildog

Echo products have gone downhill?? I say just the opposite! My experience with Echo over the past few years has been VERY positive! The trimmers are excellent (buy the 260S by the way) the new PB650 blower is awesome. My Echo units start first or second pull, run all day long and give us very few problems. We used other brands (Stihl & Husky) in the past and had little nagging problems all of the time.
