engine problem

    i am trying to make run a briggs straton 14.5hp riding mower.this is a OHV(over head valve)engine with starter,one cylinder.got fresh fuel,new spark plug,carburator was cleaned.tested for spark and is ok,also noticed that the carb is working(is sending fuel to engine)but this motor will not run,all it does is CRANK,but will not run,i do noticed that while the engine is cranking it makes small and MEd detonations(pop,pop sound) .i am runing out of ideas..if any one can help please ,thanks

    Check for proper adjustments of valves and verify the timing (flywheel key) is correct.....flywheel key not sheared. The popping sound makes me think one or both of these items is out of whack.
