Check out any reading material by Kevin Kehoe. I have been to his seminars, read his printed material and had him do 2 site visits to my company. Have also done the same with Vander Kooi and Jim Huston. Kehoe is the best. He is giving a seminar in Dallas this weekend for a very affordable price.

Why don't consultants run their own companies? That's easy- no breakdowns, no rain days, no sick employees, no all nighters during snowstorms, no DOT, and on and on...
Also, think of it from an income perspective. They charge + or - $2000 per day plus travel and lodging, plus they sell you software and books, all with virtually no overhead. If I could do it I would too, maybe in 20 more years.
Where do you get virtually no overhead? They have offices and staff and phones and advertising etc. just like any other business.
They don't work everyday and you don't develop software for free.
It's just another living but better than green industry by the hour.
we would have vandrkooi or any of his associates do some consulting work at a moments notice, IF WE COULD AFFORD IT. at this time we just dont have the extra $$$$ around to have them come in and evaluate our current situation. I do know of 2 companies who have use their services, and both were more than satisfied with their consultation. someday we will, but probably not in the near future
when you gotta beg or borrow or sell some unused assets to get educated. If you think professional services are expensive, mistakes and management ignorance are 10 fold as expensive.
It's not you can't afford help right now, it is that you can't afford not to get the help right now.
The longer your not at the top of your game, maximizing your potential the farther behind you get.
If you really can't afford a consultant right now, look around the industry and watch for seminars near you where consultants and noted authorities on various topics will be speaking. In our area, a paver mfg. sponsors a day of VanderKooi for their contractors and dealers to come and listen and learn. It does make me think that the mfg. wants us to be successful.
I would lean toward the Vander Kooi firm as well. Though I hear John Allin does some consulting work as well, that may be just for snow operations though.
Lanelle, I like the suggestion you made. In past years, when going to the EXPO in louisville, I have gone to various marketng/consulting seminars. However, I have found that, they have been targeting companies larger than ours.
The last one I recall attending was one done by the founder of Super lawn trucks.(cant remember his name, but the last name Bass keeps popping in my head) They got on the topic of H-2B workers, and spent a good 20 minutes on this topic. We arent of the size to be looking for those workers.
I'm not saying that any of these seminars arent useful, rather that I feel somewhat useless when they get on topics of this nature. If i dont have the knowledge about a particular subject, I feel unable to give any input or ask questions.
