I was mowing today, normal 7 acres, nothing out of the ordinary. Got about 2 hours into the job, shut it off to eat lunch, started back at it about 30 minutes later and the engine is knocking high/mid/low idle rpms. When I throttle back from full rpms, it has a horrible whine along with the knock. Motor has about 1800 hrs on it. Oil is full, even added a little hoping it would cure the issue. Rod knocking?

Are you sure its the engine.???
Disconnect the belts and try it again...
Could be a belt...idler pully or clutch issue...
    Any metal in the oil.??

Yea drained the oil, there is metal flakes. About 7 flakes. Its not the deck, pulleys. I did disconnect, pto, and hydro pulleys. Its still knocking. When I manually turn the motor over by hand, its turns fine, but can hear metal clanking. Model # on motor is ch740.

How often is oil changed? How about oil and air filters? Did you buy it new, how many hours if used at purchase? I might have an idea if I knew more. Glad to help but you must be honest about oil situ.

Sounds like it may need some crankshaft or rod bearings. If it isn't the pulleys that kind of narrows it down.

I have only owned the exmark for 2 months, bought the machine from a local company that switched to scag. I have probably only put about 70 hrs on it, have changed oil and filters 3 times. The prior owner was a pretty big company, so I know the employees were probably not the nicest to this machine, but I have had other kohler motors run 2800+ hrs no problem.

I would look for a short block. That is if you willing to do work yourself.
If you have to pay to fix this engine. I would just get new engine.:waving:

Time to open up the engine...Before it grenades...
They may have doctored the engine before putting it up for sale.???
Who knows...Maybe the last guy in there didnt use a torque wrench,,and the rod bolts loosened...???

Look for signs of grass stuck in the red silicone along the case joint. Dead giveaway some caveman's been workin' on it before you got it!

Yeah....I saw that thread..nothing to be proud of...
If you squeeze a quarter inch bead of silicone down to .001...
How much ends up in the oil pickup screen.???:hammerhead:
