Hi I have an Exmark Ranger 36" variable speed transmission. I purchased it new back in around 1984, It has been the best mower and I thought it would be the only mower I ever had to buy. Until we had a brush fire and forestry ran it over with a bulldozer. I am in the mist of rebuilding it. Can anyone tell me if Exmark uses Honda engines anymore? Mine has a 11hp Honda and it has been the best trouble free engine I have ever had. The machine was totaled but with an extra mower I just purchased I should be able to get her up and running again.(Sentimental Reasons) My question is how do you take the drive pulley off the rear wheel assembly? I have to change both back tires. Does anyone know if you can leave the pulley on and remove the tire while it is in place? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

    souperbee,

Let me get this straight. You have an almost 25 year old Exmark mower that narrowlly escaped a brush fire, was leveled by a bulldozer, and you want to rebuild it???? Most people would call you crazy, I call you Exmark's poster child!

What a great story! It's always fun to hear unique stories like yours. To answer your first questions, no we do not use Honda engines on any of our riding mowers. You should be able to contact a Honda Engine dealer and get prices on new engines. I'm still working on your other questions, but because very few of the service reps were here in 1984, it may take a little while. I'll keep you posted.

    P.S. How about some pictures????

    Thanks,
    Casey

Casey, Thanks for the reply and compliment I think(ha ha) My Honda engine is fine I was just wondering why you switched to different engines when that engine is outstanding. I used this mower on commercial accounts and always changed the oil every 25 hours. I changed the tires with the pulleys on, so if you ever get that question again you have the answer. If the mower didn't give me such good service I would have scrapped it. I will post you some pictures of it in a few days. I have to warn you, right now it don't look too pretty. Have a good day!

    souperbee,

I'm not 100% sure why we no longer use Honda engines. We haven't put them in any of our riders for a very long time. I do know that the small Honda engines we put on our smaller WBs are quite a bit more costly than say a Kawi. There's no doubt they are quality engines though!

Can you still read the SN on your Ranger. Your story has been floating around the office, and some of us are intrigued w/ how old this unit is. In case you didn't know, Exmark was founded in 1982, and launched their first product line in 1983. Therefore, you have one of our earliest models!!

Casey, here are some pictures of the Ranger. Included is the serial number.
It looks pretty bad right now cause I have it torn apart. But actually it needs 2 rear tires, front wheel assembly, some belts, and some TLC and she will be running again. Possibly for another 20 years. Like I said before this mower should last me the rest of my life.
    Thank You
