I'm looking at used F150's. I found a clean 1998 XL but it doesn't have the factory installed towing package (transmission cooler, larger radiator, etc). Should I steer clear or will I be okay towing about 1800 lbs of equipment around without it?

    You'll be fine.

You shouldn't even be able to feel 1800 pounds behind that truck.

    Good luck.

I think my Mazda 323 will pull 1800 lbs...just kidding.
Does that weight includes trailer weight? If yes, that's almost nothing for that truck.
If it's 1800 lbs with another 1000 lbs of trailer, it's still going to be fine.

add a good aftermarket trans cooler
and a model specific frame mounted receiver hitch
    ie. fits 97-03 f-150, light duty f-250(under 8,600 gvwr),
    and expedition

not a one size fits all universal hitch
as these require more modification to fit properly
