It seems that I have been passed up by technology? I thought that fax machines were old antiquated machines...it seems that they are used in business much more than I would have imagined.

Do I need a seperate phone number to have a fax machine? What happens if I hook it up to my home phone? Why do people use these? It seems to me that email would work better?

A fax machine is the easiest way to send a paper document. If you were to email it you would have to scan it then send it, and then who ever recieved it would need to print it out. With the fax it is printed out as you recieve it with no computer needed. The y can be had for as little as $29.95 Also it is faster then snail mail and long as its a local number its cheaper also and the one I have also doubles as a copier machine

    Hi drsogr,

If you have customers asking to fax you documents, why not hook one up. The easier you make it for them the more they will want to use your company.

    I have the Panasonic KX-FPG381
I bought it refurbished on the internet a couple years ago for around $129 and that included one cordless phone unit. You can set up 3 different mailboxes. When they get you message you can have them press #1 for personal, #2 for estimates and #3 for existing clients.....however you want. You can have up to 8 phones for the unit. I bought two off ebay the other day for $35. They just plug into an electrical outlet...you dont need a phone jack for each unit. I will probably get a couple more this summer. If you answer the phone and you hear the fax noises, just hang up and the fax will come through.....I think that's how most fax machines are nowadays. I think the prices have came down on this unit over the last couple years....under $100 on ebay. I don't use the fax more that a dozen times a year, but it's always nice to have. I needed proof of insurance for a bid just last week. Called the insurance agent and the certificate was faxed over in about 10 minutes....no waiting a few days for snail mail.

One thing to remember when buying one though, buy an extra roll of ribbon for it because the roll of ribbon that comes with them is only enough to send/receive about 10 pages. I paid something like $13 for two rolls which is enough for 500 faxes...something like that.

Here is a link of what mine is http://cgi.ebay.com/PANASONIC-KX-FP...ryZ41359QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Thanks guys...I guess I just need to buy one and play with it. I am intrigued by the different tones for a fax or a phone call. It sounds to me that you really don't need a seperate phone line. I use a fax maybe once a week, and they have so far always been outgoing. I have been running up to Dillons...and that is getting annoying.

Walker...I might check into that model, I have been happy with panasonic products in the past.

you can also go to jfax.com. they will give you a free fax number and anything faxed to you will be sent directly to your email. i think they let you receive 20 faxes a month for no charge. if you are looking to fax they will charge you a monthly subscription fee.

Go to Wal-mart or staples and check out the HP 5510v all in one scanner/fax/copier. I bought one a few months ago and paid around $100. With this one you can use one ohone line and still recive calls, fax, and use a answering machine.

I will have to check it out. I definitely do not want a printer/fax since I already have a great printer. But I wouldn't mind having one that I could copy, scan, and fax on.
