I just demoed an old concrete walkway for a customer and now they would like to put flagstone in its place. They just want a very narrow path, one piece of flagstone about every 12'' apart and they want to grow grass in between the flagstone. Normally I would just cut in the seperate pieces and lay them on some stonedust, but since there is already an excavated area from the previous walkway I'm thinking I should just fill the whole area with stone dust and lay the flagstone in as normal, but my only concern is will grass grow over the stonedust if I fill the gaps in with about 2'' of loam after I'm done. Thanks

Gras will grow OK across a few inches of stone dust but will not do well across a 3' wide path of stone dust. Fill the old walk with topsoil then excavate a small area for the flagstone and stone dust.Pack the soil around the flagstone to help stabilize it.
