ford f250 trucks

    Mileage depends on gearing as well 4.10s get worse mileage then 3.73s
    4.10s "pull" easier then 3.73s

    Expect less than 10mpg working for almost all trucks on the market... 150,250,350, they all suck.

    The thing you left out is the much higher cost of maintenance, and the fact a lot of parts on a diesel can cost about the same if not more to replace, than putting in a new gas engine....

    I have a 2001 F250 with the 5.4 v8. If it's in town towing I get around 8.5. Highway towing is around 10. I max out at about 13mpg on the highway without a trailer. I'm about to retire this bad boy to be my weekend poke around town truck and get a newer half ton. Not sure if I'm going Ford or Chevy/GMC yet, but I don't expect to increase my mileage much.

    Do you own a diesel? Most people I see quoting this have never owned a diesel. Yes my oil changes cost about 70 dollars more, but with say three oil changes a year that is only 210 dollars extra a year. Fuel filters are another 50 a year, so the "Much higher maintenance" costs are about 260 dollars a year.. i save that in fuel in a couple weeks over my gasser.
    I will agree with you that when things go wrong, it is much more expensive to fix engine problems

    You don't have to get crappy gas mileage. And your gas mileage is just like any other cost, it should be managed and it's cost minimized. I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado half ton with the 5.3 engine. My tandem axle 16 ft trailer weighs 3600 pounds loaded. The truck and trailer together scale at 8,240 pounds. On my route I average almost 13 MPG. I have about 4 miles of highway driving and then it's stop and go for the rest of the day.

    Richard, that's about what I got with my 00 Silverado 4.3 auto. Had a tandem 5x14 about the same weight. Is it better than the old Ford 302? or did you have a 300?

    It was the 5.0/302. The old truck was working it's way down to 9 MPG. It was a very faithful and trusty truck but it was time for a freshen up.
