Ford F550 vs Ram 5500

    I'm in the market for a smaller service truck after my old F550 finally bit the dust. That old '01 went 789,017 miles before being crushed by an older D8 from another company losing a TC and freewheeling down a hill into it... It was really depressing. It had a 7.3 with nothing but a 3" exhaust and it just had it's third clutch installed.

    Anyway, I have a few questions. First, since this truck will be an automatic, as much as it hurts my soul to not have the ZF6 manual, is the AISIN HD 6 speed auto any good? I know the Cummins ISB is. And outside of that Dodge trucks seem to be pretty solid, at least the 2500 has been.

    My second question is how the trucks compare driving. Much of our work is off road, and on really tight, windy switchback crap roads. In my experience the Dodge trucks (At least the 2500 in comparison to the F250) handle better. Is it the same way with Dodge's 5500 vs the F550?

    It used to be an option, as well as having a cat. I would stick with ford, the dodge transmissions have never been known as strong. Having a cummins in a dodge is like wrapping a gold bar in poop.

    Ford has had nothing but international motors in 550s

    My uncle bought a 2014 dodge 5500 and it has been in the shop non stop with little nonsense. He put 1000 miles on it driving back and forth to the dealer. I think they have some kinks to work out but the truck overall appears to be much beefier than his 550s. Havent heard many compliants on fords 6.7

    Ford has never offered a Cummins in a 550
    As far as the 6.7 heard good things. Do a def delete and your good to go

    Unfortunately, I doubt either truck will go the same amount of miles as the 7.3 did, but I would go ford again. There are some scary pictures of the insides of an Aisin with not a whole lot of miles on it. I believe ford still has their torqshift transmissions, I havnt heard a whole lot of complaints about them. Make sure you buy an extended warrant no matter which truck you buy

    Unless you need the 4x4 option, it's cheaper to go with a 4300/4400 IH level of truck. They will also turn inside the ford by quite a bit.

    The 6.7 ford motor is now made by Ford only. Not international.

    I just bought a '14 Ram 2500. After buying 10 Fords. Time will tell, but after my experiences with the 6.0 and the crappy customer service that Ford forced on their dealers, I thought it time to try a Ram again.

    I love the Cummins, although it has taken some getting used to having a 6 speed. From what I have heard, the Aisin has been a good transmission.

    lots of new diesels are having more problems now than they used to, thanks to the EPA and their emissions requirements. they'll also never last as long

    i don't know if the aisin in the dodge is the same that was used in mit-fuso trucks but if it is I'd have no worries about it. The fact that the new Daimler owned fuso is not using the aisin tranny was the biggest disappointment I had when receiving out 2013 canter. I despise these new dual-clutch transmissions... garbage.
