Started my super z up this morning and it blew a cloud of blue oil smoke out and continued to smoke for a while. I had noticed the other day that it has been using a fair amount of oil. I put a little over a quart in the other day and checked it this morning and had to put in another half quart. This is the first time I've noticed it smoking though. Anyone have any idea what could be going on? I'm thinking rings or maybe a seal somewhere inside?

How many hours? Under warranty? Are you letting it cool at idle for a minute before shut down?

837 hours. No warranty and yes I always cool it off after working it.

Took it to the dealer, he ran a compression test. Had around 95 psi on one cylinder and 110 on the other. Pulled the carb apart and it was pretty clean on the inside. A little oily residue, but nothing crazy. The machine didnt smoke on startup when I loaded it up to take it to the shop. It didnt smoke when I took it back home. I will just wait and see what it does on Monday from a cold start.

It's due for an oil change, could it be the oil breaking down?

I got the same engine on a gravely 260 and it uses oil usually about 1/2 quart every couple days. Engine has 830hrs but has always used some.

Really? If that's what I'm running into that's extremely frustrating. I'm slowly growing to dislike this mower. I know that hustler and kawasaki are not related in any way except for using their engines, but I have had cutting problems and now a potential engine problem.

Obviously I can't expect to own a piece of equipment and run it every day without any problems. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing.

You may have a broken ring on the weak cylinder, or at least one that is sticking a little and not sealing off the bore properly. My 850 doesn't have near the hours yours does, but it doesn't use any oil.........yet.

Well I hope yours doesn't. I haven't noticed any of this until today. I guess for cost reasons it's easier to put a quart of oil in every couple of days than replace an $1800 motor for now. Don't know how long I'll keep this mower.
