Hello, I put a new starter on but when I try to connect the ground cable the starter solenoid will start to spin. What could be causing this? These are new cables, ground cable as well as the power cable as well. If I connect the ground first and then the power cable the same thing happens.

If you bought the new cables from a auto parts store these cables (most I've seen) have a longer end connector than a mower cable. What I mean is there is more connector mass sticking out past where the hole is.

If this cable is installed in the wrong position the end of this connector could touch the other large post that goes to the starter motor and cause it to spin when hooked to the battery.

That's all I can offer without numbers off the engine to see what you are working on....
