Are the baffles the things that surround the blades, like little chambers?

Also, even though it's a brand new mower I'm wondering if the throttle cable stretched and I'm possibly not getting full RPM's. Blades are sharp so I can rule that out.

The baffles are bolted on the front of the deck. They are adjustable up and down and you can also remove them. They seem to reduce cut quality as if they are creating some kind of turbulence under the deck. My 460 cuts cleaner with them off and it also reduces any grass build up and clumping in damp conditions.

So if you have them try removing them and see how it does from there, as Pro said you can adjust them seems a bit hassled to me all the bolts and measuring.

Also it is best to check engine RPM's make sure they are set correctly should be 3600rpms some people like to bump them up a little where they're at 3600 with blades engaged.

    I stick to stock settings

So I swung by the workshop today and checked out the deck on my PT 148 really quick and I've determined it's a XF II deck as it has the adjustable baffles and red spindles. Wed afternoon I'm going to check the deck pitch and adjust the baffles. I noticed the baffles are about a half an inch higher up than the cutting height of the blades and about three quarters of an inch higher than the rear of the deck (they're all the way up). I'm also going to take my mower to my dealer and check the RPM's with the blades engaged.

Deck should be 1/8" forward pitch

    RPM's 3600

Try removing the baffles if all those check out see how it cuts then you can play around with them later.

Removing the baffles reduced stems as it doesnt seem to fold stems as you pass over them but causes alot of blowout out the front of the deck.Something you can try is cutting a notch lower also.

Trust me take off the baffles. Mine came off 2nd week of cutting. I threw them in the front of the garage, never to be seen again.....

Checked the deck pitch, it was perfectly level so I adjusted it for 1/8th in higher in the rear. I took the baffles off too, however I think that degraded the cut quality as it started leaving behind a lot of stragglers. The grass around here is really dry though right now.
