Just moved into a new house and trying to bring the back lawn back to life. The yard is extremely hard packed from trucks and dogs running over it for the past few years. There is little to no grass growing now. The yard is extremely shady and the water just runs across it and doesn't absorb in. So i have been working at redirecting the water off to the sides but know my question what is the best way to loosen up the soil. It is hard packed like a dirt road. I started lifting it over witha pitch fork to loosen it up but the yard is way too big for me to do this. I was wondering if i rented a rotiller or a aerator it would do the job. Just not sure what route to go. Any help will be appreciated.

Will the rotiller work since the soil is so compacted??

40hp tractor and put a 6ft tiller on it. or if that would make it too soft get a box blade and tilt it so that the teeth scrape the ground. Watch out for water lines!
