My son was trying to help fert our lawn this year and put down pre-emergent over some bare areas that I had just seeded by accident. What can I do to make sure I get growth in these areas? Thanks!

Water it hard. Give it about a week to 10 days, (after the pre-emergent is melted and absorbed to form it's barrier) and run a dethatcher or something over the area(s) to re-prep the surfaces. Reseed to make sure you have covered all the areas of any disrupted seed.
