Help With 5hp Briggs

    Model 130202 Type 0135-01 ...It has no spark. I was all set to simply order an (coil/armature). When I stated to take it off I notice a wire running from
    the coil back into the motor housing? What is that? Of course there is the wire running up to the spark plug. And there is a ground wire with loop end that fits under one of the two bolts that mt. the armature. I would have
    to pull the flywheel to get to where this other wires goes to.

    You've got a points ign system..
    3 choices...
    1)...Remove the flywheel and clean the points
    2)...Cut the wire going to the points and install a CDI...
    3)...Remove the coil and install a newer style magnetron coil from any pushmower engine that doesn't have points..

    #3 is the easiest and fool proof way to repair.....Just cut the wire going behind the flywheel and let-r-rip.....

    I would like to try one shot at cleaning those points. To get at flywheel I have to get that recoil clutch assm off. Do I turn that CCW to get if off?
    And what is the trick for holding a flywheel, don't want to break any fins off?

    Regular threads..ccw...takes it off..
    The starter clutch should come loose pretty easy with a fat punch and a hammer..
    Insert a piece of rope into the sparkplug hole to lock the crank..
    Once removed...put a piece of wood against the crank and smack it with a hammer..
    Flywheel should pop off...

    Out dueled you again Dutch....

    It came right apart no problem and the area where the points are looked clean as the day it was built. There is a little build up on the points so I guess a nail file to clean it? And gap setting?

    Make sure to wipe the points with a piece of paper after you clean them...
    Its been awhile...but I think the points are gapped at .020...???

    Maybe Dutch or RestroRob will chime in to verify the point gap.....

    You're on the money on the gap, Slapper.

    I've had flexstone files, similar to the one in the link, for mucho years although they don't get much use anymore--I haven't seen anything with points in 3 or 4 years. When I do, it gets the breakerless magnetron treatment Slapper described.

    Ok I had my fun now will someone give me a pointer to that coil with magneto? Everything went fine and I had a very good spark. The machine fired one time and then no more spark. I took it apart and don't see anything but the flywheel key split when I took the flywheel off.

    Had fun getting the ball bearings back in after making the mistake of removing the two screw to take off the screen and then didn't put them back in.
