Help with hiring a Salesperson

    I have been in business now since 2005 on a part time basis but sold my other business and would now like to AT LEAST double the amount of lawn contracts I have. I am definitely visionary entreprenur but I lack TREMENDOUSLY on organizational skills and persistence. For that reason I am looking to hire an accountant and a salesperson.

    I have found the CPA but do not know how to go about the salesperson. Considering that the company is now very small, 2-3 fulltime employees, I do not have much of a budget allowed for "non-performance" personel. I would like to hire someone on either full commission or at a low salary plus commission. THE PROBLEM IS THAT I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO STRUCTURE THE COMPENSATION. I do not know what % commission that should receive.

    Does anyone know of a company that could be sub-contracted to that has contacts throughout the country.

    I am looking to pick up about $50,000-$150,000 of contracts in the next 12 months, and would prefer it to be limited to 2-3 clients (at least $10,000 contracts). Some ideas of contracts I would like are nationwide retail chains (McDonalds, Walmart, etc), telecomunication companies, DOTD contracts, casinos, malls, school boards, right-of-ways, etc. Located in Baton Rouge, LA.

    I can't tell you a lot about hiring a salesman but you should consider this a performance position. I am like you and want to delegate this to a seasoned salesman next season. I wish my business was large enough to hire one but you should be there soon.

    As soon as I posted this I knew I'd get that response:). I am very curious though to see if any other company here has some creative idea to hire a quality person on a budget. I don't even know what percent of the contract they should get as a bonus.

    Does anyone know of a company available for hire that finds/estimates jobs as a sub-contractor?

    Something/someone else to consider is getting a commercial real estate salesman to help part time. They already know who to talk to and aren't looking for something full time.

    Contact SCORE, set up an appointment with a councilor. I believe they will be able to advise you based on your specific needs. The service is free, well worth your time if you can afford the investment.

    Yes and I believe their listed in the phone book. Otherwise google them.

    Just thinking here...if you can't afford to pay someone a decent salary + commision. How are you going to pay them once you hire them? And be able to pay their commision & ALL of the expansion that comes with this? More insurance,equipment,labor cost,trucks & materials. Floating all of these new expenses for months until the new clients get you into their system for payments & payments become more structured and on time.

    You might get a new client that pays on a 45 day schedule & it takes 30+ days before they even enter you into their payment cycle! Can you afford all that extra operating expenses inbetween PLUS not missing a paycheck + commision + bonuses for your new sales guy?

    Nobody in their right mind can come into your company right now and work for peanuts & promises. They want (just throwing this out there) $45,000 + 8% commision + work truck & laptop or IPAD. Lots of promotional materials and a really good 12 month marketing program to keep leads coming in the door year round. With what you already said that you lack organazational skills & what not....a decent sales person is going to see that right off the bat and head for the hills.

    Also do you have a system in place that is proven for bidding? without a system you will have no pricing structure for your new sales guy to go off of that is proven that you will net off what he sells. I had a sales guy 5-6 years ago selling for what we "thought" was a good deal for us & the client. We soon found out that we were running our company into the ground. We didn't infact know our own costs.

    As Duekster said....a college kid is your best bet. Someone young,dumb & full of.....FUN!
