    Hiring professional help

I posted this question in the Pesticide forum. But I am not getting the response I am looking for. Therefore I am posting it in the commercial lawn care forum because it has a higher number of members reading it. My question is what is the best way to hire or advertise for a Spray tech here in Florida?

    1. Should I look for a person with a good attitude and some experience in the green Industry and train them?

    2. Should I look for a person with a good attitude and a lot of Experience in the green Industry and Train them?

    3. Should I look for a person with a background spraying here in Florida?

In any case I want this employee to stay with me year round and for many years if they are good. I can offer them training in many areas of the Green Industry. The Job is for a full time spray tech however that person would also be called upon to do irrigation. They would also be asked to work on the landscape installation and nurseries from time to time. Inside of a few years this person could walk away with all the same certification that I have. The main ones being CPO, Irrigation and Commercial Landscape Contractor.
The next town south of me has a college that offers a Horticulture Degree at night. Therefore a sharp person could be set for life in the Green Industry in just a few short years.

I feel I am offering an opportunity not a job. How can I get this point across in an advertisement for help wanted?

There are several people on this board whose opinion I hold in high regard and seldom respond to their post because they are well thought out, well written and definitive. You are very high on this list so I hesitate to offer advise But here goes--

The first thing you may want to look for is someone who already has an interest in Plants.

You have a great deal to offer without offering College or Trade Schools right away.

    You can offer someone with an interest in plants;
    Business experience
    Marketing experience
Practical on the job training while they are paid
You can offer a Professional Career that will carry with it the respect, security and monetary awards a Professional deserves

You can offer a FUTURE, the future they want

You may want to refine your search to referrals from high school teachers, college professors, extension specialist, Junior Master Gardner programs.

In my limited experience with help wanted adds, I have only been successful in finding people with severe personal problems. These problems surface at some point and my search continues.

While attitude plays an important role in all employees, I don't think it is a substitute for a person who is interested in what they are doing, enjoy the work, knowing there is security in the job and looking forward to the next day.

    Good Luck,
You have a lot to offer
You can offer the right person a way to make their dreams come TRUE

I would go and speak with the instructors in that college and ask them to identify the potential candidates for you.

If they are already taking the night classes and working towards similar goals, they are proving that they have the "motivation, desire or attitude" that you are looking for.

I got my degree from that college and have done guest lectures at that college. Therefore That was the first place I looked. Because it is a night school most all of the students are already working. Those few who are not already working I know. Need I say more. No I am not looking for a PHD. Just a good old boy who has some interest in the bizz. That person can get as much out of the job as they are willing to put into it.

BOTTOM LINE IS I STARTED THIS THREAD TO LET LS MEMBERS KNOW I AM HIRING A SPRAY TECH. IF A MEMBER OF LS IS INTERESTED IN THE OPPORTUNITY OF BECOMING A FLORIDA CERTIFIED PEST CONTROL OPERATOR, A IRRIGATION CONTRACTOR AND A COMMERCIAL LANDSCAPE INSTALLATION CONTRACTOR THEN CONTACT ME. IF NOT THEN STOP B***H ABOUT HOW HARD IT IS TO GET A LICENSE IN FLORIDA. IF YOU WANT TO BE A REAL PRO THEN THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. IT WILL TAKE A MINIMUM OF 3 YEARS TO QUALIFY TO SIT FOR ALL THE TESTS.

Moderators I hope I have not broken any rules about advertising. If I have then please delete this thread.

My aren't we testy!?! Skip your Wheaties this morning Ric?

Now, who is complaining about the difficulty of obtaining a Florida license?? I reread the thread twice now, and i am not catching that.

Tell me Ric, does a REAL PRO swear at people in a public forum?

    This is a joke right?????????????

No I did not eat Wheaties and Thank you for pointing this out. However To answer your question about REAL PRO. Those who live in Glass houses shouldn't throw rocks. I know who you are, what you are, Where you are, and Who you are in bed with. Sorry I really don't have an issue with you. Only your buddy who you defend. I will give you a lot of credit for being a true friend to him. As you know, I have tried (not as hard as you) to do the same for another Rock who is my friend.

    To all members

I posted this reply late Sunday Night after a sleepless week-end because of a off topic thread about "Hanoi Jane". This topic was started by a anti war faction and found its way to LS via a member who was also taken in by it. Anyone under 50 years old can not fully understand this. It is an old man thing. Therefore I was and still am very testy this morning. 99.9% of the time, I eat my Wheaties. Over the last couple of years there have been many posts regarding Florida Licenses and how hard they are to get. Being very testy I went off. I will not say I am sorry. To my friends I don't have to. My enemies wouldn't believe me any way. No, this post was not a joke. We are a growing company that I started, but now has several partners. Each partner runs a different division. Nursery, Sod, Landscape, Yard maintenance, I run Pest and Irrigation.

    Mr. GraZZmaZter Sir.

Case of mistaken Identity sir. I looked at the name and not the location. There is a Grassmaster here in Florida. Sir, I have eaten my Wheaties since I first posted to you. Sir. I own you an apology. I was wrong. Therefore I ask to be forgiven.
