Honda HRR216

    One of my customers just gave me this mower. It has been sitting for a few years and will start and die. I took the carb bowl off it was very gummed up . I removed the carb and soaked it for a few minutes and got some white chalky stuff out of it. Put it back together and it did the same thing. the fuel lines are clean and if I turn the gas valve on with the bowl off gas does run thru it. All suggestions would be appreciated. The mower was used just a few times and then parked.

    Ive got a 3 HRR216 given to me by my uncle, one started and runs fine, the other will start and run, but have a terrible idle...best bet would be to buy a new carb for it, they are like $15 w/o shipping. Once those little holes get clogged, good luck....I tried everything from compressed air @140psi...soaking in GumOut overnight...and soaking in Carb Cleaning....nothing worked. Good luck.

    MowZ, soaking and blowing out the carb rarely does the job.

    Here's a link to instructions for Honda carb repair. The carb shown is off a GX390 but the construction and process are pretty much the same.

    Just a word of warning---make sure you have a screwdriver that fully fits the barrel and the slot in the main jet. The brass main jet can be damaged quite easily with an ill fitting driver.

    You can get a GCV160 carb made in china off ebay for like $20 shipped. I promise it'll run like new again. I got an HRX217TDA from staten island for $50, and with a $20 carb it ran like new. I use it for my trim mower where my 52" turf tracer hps won't fit.

    There are really, REALLY small passageways inside a carburetor, and it does not take much to plug them up, especially with ethanol fuels that have been allowed to "rot" in a mower for a while. Anything over 30 days is suspect.

    While you can clean one, it has to be perfect; lots of carb cleaner and compressed air, and even then, nothing is for sure. For the time it takes to fully disassemble and properly clean one, you could bolt on a brand new one for <$20 and save yourself a lot of time and trouble. The easy way is to get the serial number off the back of the mower deck, "MXXX-1234567" and call your local Honda dealer; they can match up the right carb for your mower quickly. Often, it is cheaper to buy local vs. online when you figure the costs (and time) of shipping vs. sales taxes. Shop around and compare.

    Finally, when installing a new carburetor, it's a good idea to replace the gaskets on either side of the carb at the same time. A tiny leak will cause too much air to enter the mower and it will still run poorly even with a new carb. Be sure to securely tighten the two long bolts that hold down the carb, gaskets, spacer, and air cleaner base for a tight seal; here's a general drawing to help:

    Good info Robert!!
    I know from experience that its a crap shoot when it comes to Honda carbs!
    I've completely disassembled and cleaned 'em ( even the idle mix screw), some would perform great, others not so great. Better to just replace 'em.
