How clean before mulching?

Starting my second year, and offering mulching. Looked at one property and the beds have miscellaneous stuff in them - branches, dead leaves, dead plants, perennials just coming up. I figure on removing the branches, but didn't know if dead leaves could be left and mulch placed over them. Also, could dead plants be left if the mulch would cover them?

How clean do the beds need to be before mulching?

    Thanks!

If the leaves aren't bad I will put mulch over them. I will remove the branches and dead plants to keep them from coming up. I normally put a 3-4" layer of mulch down. The leaves break down fast under the mulch just make sure there are not near the beds edge.

It will all decompose anyways...as long as the mulch will cover it then it will not hurt. Just be sure it looks satisfactory and dont worry about cleanliness of the bed before mulching.
