How many of you are irked when resi customers are HOME?

    Yeah it is! Always when you have gotten behind for the day and right when you get done and putting everything back on the trailer they come a walking... Lol

    Try to schedule them in the second half of the day,the later the better, if possible. When they ask you how you are doing, tell them how you are so far behind ( which we always are) and how you have 6 hours of work to get done, before it gets dark. Do not stop. You must keep walking as you are talking. If you are an old fart like me and they ask you if you want something to eat, reply with my feet(?) my feet are killing me. Mumbling also works good. You must keep walking. Do not stop. That is when the fish, being you, gets hooked. All of my present customers are good. Once every couple of years, I get one that wants to spend the day talking to me.

    Sometimes my clients wish they could get away from ME! :laugh:

    Ask me how the dog is doing (medical issues) and I'll have you there for an hour.
    I'm like a grandparent bragging about a grandchild when it comes to talking about pets. ;)

    And any time I can, I shut down the mower to say hello to dogs being walked.
    Dogs are a reset button for a crappy day. (unless you step in their poo!)

    Interesting Oak. For me, dogs on customer's properties can turn a good day sour real fast.

    Heh. I nearly dropped a client a few weeks back. Three times in a row they forgot to latch the dog door and the dogs came running out into the lawn when I started trimming along the fence. Nice.
    While I'd have loved to play fetch with them all day, that isn't what I was there for.

    The first time I left and came back the next day - and not happy about it.
    The second time, they came home and put the dogs in just as I was about to load back up and say "screw it".
    The third time they remembered that they forgot to latch it and texted me saying they would be home in half an hour. I had JUST pulled up and texted that info back. They were there within ten minutes. I had decided that if they didn't get there before I needed to do inside the fence they were done, dropped, gone.

    Aside from that, I have almost no interaction with my client's dogs as most people aren't home when I mow. When I work in the city though there are dogs being walked all over the place - some by owners and some by dog walkers.
    Dog walkers are a good "connection" to future work. Stopping to chat has gotten me "in" with some and they have asked for business cards to give out.

    See. Look at me going on and on about dogs. :laugh:

    I have a higher end customer that loves to bring her younger son out to watch me cut and stripe with the walker. His face looks like mine did the first time i sat on the mower. i will always try to talk to my customers when time allows. I dislike not having seen a few of them in person, but the moneys always green.

    An earlier post said it best; Nothing says "time is money" than when a 26hp engine is running in the background. Most of the higher-end will know what it means.
    That said, a "talk" has been my most successful approach to the subject.
    It's not that I don't wanna talk. It cost money...it costs momentum and productivity.
    IMO, "Training" an employee to stand around and BS is not the best path to success. I mean, setting of habits.

    There are certain ones that are worse than others. Yesterday I fell two yards behind because of chatty Kathy customers. I think some people are just clueless.

    90% of the time my customers are home if we are on a slower day which we do have a few since we have more every 10 day cuts now instead of bi-weekly which gives a small break in certain weeks we will shoot the shat a few, all my resi customers know them all well all good people if we are busy don't mind a quick chat they know we got to get back to work on busy days we just say we got to go see you next time they understand we don't have any flakers I dumped those this year.

    I've said it before, I'll say it again.... Nothing worse than a dog with digestive issues, especially when your tire/boot just went through it.
