How many of you have reduced or moved away from the mowing drill....

    ....to focus on applications only where many claim there is more profit?

    I'm looking for most of my growth in 2014 to be in lawn fertilization and I will only offer weed control for those who are already fertilization clients.

    I'm looking to only add mowing clients where I am the sole provider of fertilizer to reduce typical mowing hassles and excessive top growth.

    Any helpful tips in this area much appreciated.

    I'm not sure your mowing idea will work since almost all of my customers tell me how often they want their lawn mowed. If that's what you're talking about.

    With maybe only 2 exceptions I'm really wanting to drop all EOW mowing accounts and the ones who want mowing every 10 days or I jump to their dictates. No your lawn isn't going to be mowed on Friday...that's my make up day. The only way to last in the mowing realm is absolute market density and offer something different than the crowd.

    I'm getting pretty close to telling the clients, "it's my way or the highway", but I'm willing to give incentives or rewards for good behavior. Basically going for the "lawn trainer" approach. My goal has always been the healthiest most vibrant lawns in the area. If I mow them great if not even better...as long as they are not mowing too low or their mowing contractor is not low mowing. The vast majority of mowing contractors are mowed well below optimal heights in my service area.

    This approach may not fly but I'm not here to provide just a average to slightly above average product or end result. 75%+ off my accounts need to rock or it reflects poorly on me.

    I recently sold my maintenance operations and all equipment, got rid of 2 employees, and I will be 100% applications in 2014. Sales will drop a lot and I expect my net will drop some as well. It's a long term commitment but the writing was on the walls with maintenance. We weren't making anymore money and it was just a matter of time until it had to go. I see a lot more potential with fert than maintenance.

    Are you doing applications for shrubs and trees or just lawn APS only?

    It has been a tough sell getting folks to drop the big Co. in favor of a small fish Co. who doesn't spray trees or shrubs. I believe success is very viable in what I'm going for but I believe one has to be head and shoulders better in some if not many tangible aspect over full property applications.

    Currently just lawn apps. I have built everything on a simple 5 step program with NO upsells. Very few requests for ornamental treatments but I will explore into this as I get more time. I'm sure there is money to be made here.

    I do wonder what the stats are for residentials who hire out lawn APS profesionally but:
    * mow themselves
    * neighbor kid mow
    * have another Professional Co. Mow
    Vs the same Company doing the entire lawn in every aspect...?

    I only do lawn apps and aeration.

    Dropped mows, maint, landscaping years ago and would never go back.

    All my equip fits on 1 5x8 trailer with my truck bed full of fert.

    99% of my customers mow the lawn themselves
    maybe 1% has another company do the mowing
    Customer pool for ferts is huge compared to mowing&fert in my area.

    People just don't like to deal with chems.

    Mowing in my area is simply a commodity for most customers. Yeah they want it to look nice but they aren't gonna pay top $.

    About 80% of my neighbors have a company do APS and mow themselves.
